The battle of Bloody Gulch (Carentan) - 13th of June 1944

Normandie Juin 1944 :

Carentan est une petite ville située à la base de la péninsule du Cotentin. Elle doit être capturée afin de permettre la jonction entre les troupes venues d'Utah Beach et celles sorties d'Omaha Beach.

Le 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment de la 101st Airborne entre dans Carentan le 12 juin après de très durs combats face aux Fallschirmjäger du major Von der Heydte qui entament un replie vers 18 heures.

Dans la nuit du 12 au 13 Juin et le 13 juin, les compagnies F et E (Easy Company du capitaine Winters rendue célèbre par la série télévisée Band of Brothers) vont affronter à l'ouest de Carentan les éléments de la 17ème SS Panzer Grenadier Division Götz von Berlichingen arrivés en renfort. Face à cet assaut, la compagnie F recule exposant le flanc de la compagnie D et E du 506th PIR. La contre attaque allemande est contenue grâce aux renforts de blindés de la 2nd Armored Division US.

Les paras américains de la 101st Airborne ont donné le nom de Bloody Gulch à cette bataille.

Mon diorama décrit les éléments de la Easy Company aux prises avec les blindés de la 17ème Panzer. Les soldats Welsh et McGrath détruisirent ce jour là un Sturmgeschütz avec leur bazooka.

Carentan is a small town located at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandie. It must be captured to allow the junction between the troops from Utah Beach and Omaha Beach.

The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne came into Carentan on June 12 after fighting very hard against the Major Von der Heydte's Fallschirmjäger .

On the night of 12 to 13th June and 13th June, companies F and E (Captain Winters Easy Company made famous by the TV series Band of Brothers) will face west of Carentan elements of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division Götz von Berlichingen arrived as reinforcements. Faced with this onslaught, Company F back exposing the flank of Company D and E of the 506th PIR. The German attack was contained through armored reinforcements of the 2nd Armored Division.

Paratroopers of the 101st Airborne gave the name of Bloody Gulch in this battle.
