Pendant l’été 1780, Américains et Britanniques s’affrontèrent à plusieurs reprises en Caroline du nord, afin d’assoir leur domination sur le pays.

Le général Horatio Gates, le vainqueur de Saratoga, fut envoyé dans le sud afin de retourner la situation à l’avantage des insurgés. Ce dernier, à la tête de 4 000 hommes, décida d’assiéger Camden, en Caroline du sud, à la fin du mois de juillet 1780.

La bataille se déroula à 10 km de la ville de Camden et, malgré leur supériorité numérique, les Américains (mal entrainés) furent battus par les Britanniques du général Cornwallis et perdirent plus de 800 tués et blessés. Un millier d'entre eux furent également faits prisonniers par les Britanniques qui renforcèrent ainsi par cette victoire leur emprise sur la Caroline.

Les pertes britanniques s'élevèrent à 324 tués et blessés.

Durant cette bataille le 1er Delaware est l'un des régiments continentaux qui subira le plus de pertes. Parti au combat avec 275 hommes, le régiment perd 70 tués et 70 blessés.

During the summer of 1780, the Americans and British fought several times in North Carolina, to sit their domination over the country.

General Horatio Gates, the victor of Saratoga, was sent south to return the situation to the advantage of the insurgents. The latter, at the head of 4000 men, decided to besiege Camden, South Carolina, at the end of July 1780.

The battle took place 6 miles from the city of Camden, and despite their numerical superiority, the Americans (poorly trained) were defeated by the British General Cornwallis and lost more than 800 killed and wounded. A thousand of them were also captured by the British and strengthened by this victory on their grip North Carolina.

The British lost 324 killed and wounded.

The Delaware Regiment suffers greatly as one of the veteran Continental units that stands their ground and fights at the Battle of Camden as much of General Gates’ army retreats precipitously.  Going into battle with approximately 275 men, the Delaware Regiment suffers heavy casualties with about 70 killed and 70 wounded. 10 officers and about 60 soldiers are captured (possibly some of the wounded).
